To sew clothes from stretch fabric, should I buy a serger? What kind? Do I need one with a coverstitch?
I have sewn several things in stretch fabric, without using a serger, but my normal sewing machine (it’s about 5 years old, basic model Bernina).
It has several stiches for strech fabric – including a normal straight stich where it goes three forward then two back, then three forward then two back, etc… makes a great strong seam that looks like a normal seam, but holds really well when streched.
Alternatively, you can use a twin-needle, which makes what looks like two straight stiches on the front, and zig-zag on the back. Check the bottom seam of a tee-shirt; it comes out looking like that.
So don’t worry about spluring for a serger – you can go for it with a normal sewing machine.
